When you manage a commercial building of any kind, there is much to consider in maintaining safety for all. As fire is one of the greatest threats to facilities every day of the year, fire protection companies have developed numerous types of fire protection systems to quickly put out all fire emergencies. One of these is the fire sprinkler system. Read on to learn more about the different kinds of fire sprinkler systems and see how Chesapeake Sprinkler Company can help you.
Wet Pipe
One of the most standard types of fire sprinkler systems is the wet pipe system. It is a closed system pressurized from a water supply. The sprinkler heads in the area of the fire activate and open at a prescribed temperature. The system will extinguish or contain the fire until responders arrive and take the system out of service.
Dry Pipe
The dry pipe system is installed where systems may be subjected to freezing temperatures. The system is pressurized with air or nitrogen gas. When a head activates, the pressurized gas is released and water supply floods the system, driving water to the actuated head in the area of the fire.
Pre-action
Pre-action systems have a two-step process to allow the sprinkler heads to flow water. The system is pressurized with air or nitrogen like a dry system. In this system sensors must detect heat or smoke for the system to be flooded with water. Activation of a sprinkler head will exhaust the air or nitrogen, but detector activation will allow the water to flood the system. Pre-action systems are desirable in buildings that are sensitive to water damage, such as museums, tech centers, and libraries; this system is a safeguard.
Deluge
With the deluge system, the sprinkler heads are always open, and the system piping is not pressurized. The heat or smoke detectors are located strategically in the covered area. When the detectors sense a fire the system valve opens and water rushes into the system and to the open heads. This type of fire sprinkler system is ideal for areas with flammable liquids, which can spread flames quickly.
ESFR
This is a specialized type of wet system. ESFR (Early Response Fast Response) is a system designed to protect storage facilities with rack storage up to 30 or even 40 feet. This type of sprinkler system delivers enough water to suppress fires in storage facilities without the use of in-rack sprinklers.
